Geology of the Byrd Glacier Discontinuity (Ross Orogen): New survey data from the Britannia Range, Antarctica

چکیده
Field activities in the Britannia Range (Transantarctic Mountains, Antarctica) highlighted new geological features around the so-called Byrd Glacier discontinuity. Recent field surveys revealed the occurrence of significant amounts of mediumto high-grade metamorphic rocks, intruded by abundant coarse-grained porphyritic granitoids. Most of the granitoids are deformed, with foliation parallel to the regional foliation in the metamorphics. Two main episodes of deformation are observed. Tight to isoclinal folds and penetrative axial plane foliation are related to the D1 phase, open folds to the D2. The main foliation (D1) trends nearly E-W in agreement with the trend in the southern portion of the Byrd Glacier. In most outcrops, granitic dykes are folded and stretched by the D2 deformation, which shows similar characteristics with the D2 deformation south of the Byrd Glacier. This suggests the occurrence in the Ross orogen of an orogen-normal structure south and north of the Byrd Glacier. Citation: Carosi, R., F. Giacomini, F. Talarico, and E. Surface "Waves" on Byrd Glacier, Antarctica
Byrd Glacier has one of the largest ice catchment areas in Antarctica, delivers more ice to the Ross Ice Shelf than any other ice stream, and is the fastest of these ice streams. A force balance, combined with a mass balance, demonstrates that stream flow in Byrd Glacier is transitional from sheet flow in East Antarctica to shelf flow in the Ross Ice Shelf. The longitudinal pulling stress, calc...
متن کاملThe seismic structure of Precambrian and early Palaeozoic terranes in the Lambert Glacier region, East Antarctica
The Lambert Glacier region of East Antarctica encompasses the proposed boundary between three of the ancient continents that formed East Gondwana: Indo-Antarctica, the central East Antarctic Craton and a proposed extension of the Pinjarra Orogen of Australia. The only area of extensive rock exposure in central East Antarctica, it uniquely allows the seismic structure to be linked to surface geo...
متن کاملMetamorphism in the Ross orogen and its bearing on Gondwana margin tectonics
The Ross orogen of Antarctica is one of Earth’s great Phanerozoic mountain belts. It is thought from igneous geochemistry, deformation patterns, and sedimentation history to be the result of late Neoproterozoic and early Paleozoic plate-margin convergence between paleo-Pacifi c oceanic lithosphere and continental lithosphere represented by the composite East Antarctic shield. Convergence along ...
متن کاملSiliciclastic record of rapid denudation in response to convergent-margin orogenesis, Ross Orogen, Antarctica
Siliciclastic rocks of the upper Byrd Group in the Transantarctic Mountains record rapid denudation and molasse deposition during Ross orogenesis along the early Paleozoic convergent margin of Gondwana. These rocks, which stratigraphically overlie Lower Cambrian Byrd carbonate deposits, are dominated by fresh detritus from proximal igneous and metamorphic sources within the Ross Orogen. Biostra...
متن کاملRegistering imagery to ICESat data for measuring elevation changes on Byrd Glacier, Antarctica
[1] We present a new approach to derive control information from ICESat data that enables rigorous registration of aerial and satellite imagery. The technique, based on matching terrain features identified from ICESat measurements and aerial imagery, opens the door to transform results of previous studies to a global reference frame. We demonstrate the proposed methodology with historical aeria...
